BSA is generally used as a stabilizer in the storage solutions and reaction solutions of restriction enzymes or modified enzymes, because some enzymes are unstable or have low activity at low concentrations. After adding BSA, it may play the role of "protection" or "carrier", and many enzymes can greatly improve their activity after adding BSA. Enzymes that do not require the addition of BSA are generally not affected by the addition of BSA. For most substrate DNA, BSA can make the digestion more complete, and can achieve repeated cleavage. At 37°C, when the digestion reaction exceeds 1 h, BSA can make the enzyme more stable, because in the reaction buffer without BSA, many restriction enzymes can only survive at 37°C for 10~20min or even shorter time. . In contrast, BSA can bind metal ions and other chemicals in buffer or substrate DNA that inhibit the activity of restriction endonucleases.

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) makes up approximately 50% of the total protein in serum. Although it may be used as a carrier for hapten immunization in animals other than goats and sheep, it is more commonly used as a carrier for hapten in immunoassays. The small size of BSA, its abundance in serum, and the similarity between BSA and albumins from other species makes it less desirable for antibody production.
