Casein is a non-crystalline, non-hygroscopic substance, 0.8-1.2% soluble in water at room temperature, slightly soluble in water and organic solvents at 25°C, soluble in dilute alkali and concentrated acid, and can absorb water. Expands rapidly, but mosquitoes do not bind.

Casein is a phosphorus-containing protein in animal milk. The structural formula is NH2RCOOH, an odorless, tasteless white to yellow powder with a relative density of 1.25-1.31. Almost insoluble in water, alcohol and ether. Soluble in dilute lye, alkaline carbonate solution and concentrated acid, and precipitate in weak acid. Hygroscopic, stable when dry, and hardens quickly when wet.
