There are two states of oxidized (NAD+) and reduced (NADH) in mammals. Beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide also acts as a substrate for bacterial DNA ligases and a group of enzymes called sirtuins, which use NAD+ to remove acetyl groups from proteins.
