Tetrandrine is an alkaloid that was isolated from the root of the Asian herb Stephania tetrandra. It is a constituent of the Chinese herbal drug han-fang-chi.

1. Immune System Disease: Tetrandrine can significantly inhibit the development of arthritis, stronger than aspirin, and can be applied to rheumatoid arthritis treatment.
2. Cardiovascular System Disease: Tetrandrine does not only have calcium antagonism, inhibit ventricular myocytes T-type and L-type calcium channel, but also can interact with the M receptor, block calcium activation of potassium channels, as a new treatment of paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia.
3. Digestive System: Tetrandrine has a certain role in the protection of liver cells and anti-liver fibrosis.
4. Ophthalmic Disease: Tetrandrine is used in the treatment of ocular inflammation, including uveitis, keratitis and retinopathy induced.

Other: Tetrandrine has a significant antagonistic effect on streptomycin-induced acute nephrotoxicity, can reduce the apoptosis and proliferation of renal tubular epithelial cells, protect renal function, and acute renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.
