Hygromycin B is an antibiotic produced by Streptomyces hygroscopicus, one of the aminoglycoside antibiotics, and it is a yellowish brown powder. Hygromycin B kills bacteria, fungi, and some higher eukaryotes by inhibiting protein biosynthesis in the cells of these organisms. Hygromycin B is soluble in methanol, ethanol and water, but almost insoluble in ether, chloroform or benzene.

Hygromycin B, like most aminoglycoside antibiotics, stops microbial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. It can stabilize the tRNA binding site on the large subunit of the ribosome, so that the empty tRNA cannot escape from the ribosome and inhibit the continuation of translation. The inhibitory effect of hygromycin is effective for both prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes of. Prevents adult ovulation, truncates the life cycle of parasites, prevents larvae from growing, and prevents them from maturing. Hygromycin B is effective against Ascaris suum, Trichuris, Strongyloides, Ascaris nodosa, Heterospinus, Capillary nematodes, etc. It has a good nematode effect when added in the mid-term of pig and poultry feed. In addition, it also has a certain antibacterial effect.
