Caspofungin acetate is a semi-synthetic lipopeptide (echinocandin) compound synthesized from the fermentation product of Glarea Lozoyensis. Caspofungin acetate can inhibit the synthesis of β(1,3)-D-glucan, a basic component of many filamentous fungi and yeast cell walls. P(1,3)-D-glucan is not present in mammalian cells. In vitro pharmacological studies have shown that caspofungin has antibacterial activity against many species of pathogenic Aspergillus and Candida fungi. A standard drug susceptibility test method for the detection of β(1,3)-D-glucan synthesis inhibitors has not yet been established. Furthermore, the results of drug susceptibility testing may not necessarily correlate with clinical results.

Caspofungin acetate for injection can be used for empiric treatment of neutropenia, suspected fungal infection in patients with fever, and treatment ineffective or intolerable to other treatments for adult patients and pediatric patients (three months and more) Invasive aspergillosis. Caspofungin against Aspergillus (including Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus nidulans, Aspergillus terreus and Aspergillus albicans) and Candida (including Candida albicans, Candida, Candida gilimonis, Candida lactis, Candida krusei, Candida lipolytica, Candida portuguese, Candida parapsilosis, Candida rugosa, and Candida tropicalis) have in vitro activity.
