Docetaxel is a cytotoxic agent, especially in proliferating cells, related to its ability to promote microtubule bundle formation and induce persistent mitotic arrest followed by apoptosis or permanent mitotic arrest in mitotic cells. Docetaxel inhibits microtubule motility instability as well as microtubule treadmilling, resulting in the inability of chromosomes to segregate into daughter cells, which in turn causes premature exit from mitosis rather than arrest in the cell cycle phase.
