Bacitracin is a mixture of related cyclic polypeptides. These peptides disrupt both gram positive and gram negative bacteria by interfering with cell wall and peptidoglycan synthesis.

Bacitracin is used as a topical preparation (since it is toxic and has poor oral bioavailability). In terms of adverse reactions only, in comparison with bacitracin, white petrolatum possesses an equally low infection rate and minimal risk for induction of allergy.

Bacitracin zinc is a complex formed by bacitracin and zinc ions. It is a polypeptide antibiotic and is currently the most widely used antibiotic feed additive. The zinc content is generally 2% to 12%. The synthetic product is a white or slightly yellow powder with a special odor, easily deliquesced into a weakly alkaline substance, and easily soluble in water, methanol and ethanol. Bacitracin zinc has a strong antibacterial effect on gram-positive bacteria, and also has antibacterial activity on some gram-negative bacteria. The use of bacitracin zinc in swine full-price feed can promote growth rate, improve feed remuneration, and prevent swine bacterial diarrhea and chronic respiratory diseases. The addition concentration is generally effective at 10-100 mg/kg, and the effect is not significantly improved beyond this addition range. Bacitracin zinc is generally not absorbed in pig intestines, so there is no residual problem, and it is a safe and reliable antibiotic drug additive. Bacitracin zinc is highly toxic and is not easily absorbed by the intestine, so it cannot be used for the treatment of systemic infections.
