Application:

Marbofloxacin is used for the respiratory tract, digestive tract, urinary tract and skin infections of cattle, pigs, dogs and cats caused by sensitive bacteria. It is also effective for bovine and goat mastitis and swine mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome.

Marbofloxacin is a fungicide, and its bactericidal activity is concentration-dependent. Sensitive bacteria can die 20 to 30 minutes after exposure. Like other fluoroquinolones, marbofloxacin shows significant post-antibiotic effects against both Gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, and is active in both stationary and growth phases of bacterial replication. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is thought to work by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (type II topoisomerase), preventing DNA supercoil formation and DNA synthesis. Marbofloxacin and other veterinary commercial fluoroquinolones have a similar spectrum of antimicrobial activity. These drugs have good activity against most gram-negative bacilli and cocci, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Campylobacter, Shigella, Salmonella Most species and strains of , Aeromonas, Haemophilus, Proteus, Yersinia, Vibrio, etc. Other commonly susceptible species include Brucella, Chlamydia trachomatis, Staphylococcus (including penicillinase-producing and methicillin-resistant), Chlamydia, and Mycobacteria. Fluoroquinolones have variable activity against most streptococci and are generally not recommended for the treatment of infections in this genus. These drugs have weak activity against most anaerobic bacteria and are not effective in treating anaerobic infections. Due to variation, resistant strains have emerged, especially Pseudomonas, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter, and Enterococcus, but plasmid-mediated resistance is generally considered to be rare.
