Dolutegravir sodium salt is a second-generation HIV-1 integrase strand transfer inhibitor. Dolutegravir sodium is currently in Phase III clinical trials for the treatment of HIV infection. Dolutegravir sodium salt has been shown to effectively inhibit HIV replication in cells infected with self-inactivated PHIV lentiviral vectors, such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), MT-4 cells and CIP4 cells.

On August 12, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it for HIV-1 previously treated or treatment-naïve adults and children 12 years and older weighing at least 40 kg. Dolutegravir is a once-daily drug that rivals Merck's HIV/AIDS drug Raltegravir (Isentress) in Phase III clinical trials. Ritegravir was taken twice a day, both of which are inhibitors of HIV integrase. FDA officials said that HIV-infected people need targeted treatment based on individual circumstances, and Tivicay will provide patients with new options. In a study conducted a year ago, 88 percent of patients treated with Tivicay for 48 weeks saw significant improvement, better than Gilead's Atripla.
