Aztreonam has a high degree of antibacterial activity against most aerobic gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Oxitobacter, Aerogenes, Cloacae, Proteus, Sand Enterobacteriaceae bacteria such as Lethella, Citrobacter, Shigella, as well as influenza bacillus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, meningococcus, etc., which also have good antibacterial effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and have good antibacterial effect on some Pseudomonas other than Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter have poor antibacterial effects , has no antibacterial activity against aerobic Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and anaerobic bacteria. Aztreonam inhibits cell wall synthesis through high affinity to penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3) on the cell membrane of sensitive aerobic Gram-negative bacteria. Aztreonam can be used to treat upper respiratory tract infection, severe bronchitis, acute severe trachea in patients with cystic fibrosis, pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection and chronic pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in cystic fibrosis patients allergic to β-lactam.

1. Monocyclic β-lactam antibiotics have strong antibacterial effect on Gram-negative bacteria, and are stable to β-lactamase, but slightly unstable to plasmid or chromosome-mediated type 1 enzymes.
