Diquafosol is a dinucleotide derivative that acts on P2Y2 receptors on the membranes of conjunctival epithelial cells and goblet cells, and promotes the secretion of aqueous fluid from conjunctival epithelial cells and the secretion of goblet cell mucin. In a double-blind clinical trial, diquafosol sodium was similar to and better than sodium hyaluronate in the treatment of corneal and conjunctival lesions, respectively.
