Gadobutrol is a gadolinium-containing contrast agent for nuclear spin tomography, which has been approved in Germany as Gadovist since 2000 for the indication "Contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) of the skull and spine". Gadobutrol is composed of gadolinium (III) and the macrocyclic ligand 10-(2,3-dihydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl)propyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane -Nonionic complex composed of 1,4,7-triacetic acid (butrol). Gadolinium-containing contrast agents have become the most commonly used MRI contrast agents in clinical practice, and gadobutrol is the sixth gadolinium-based contrast agent approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for CNS resonance imaging.
